Give Fall Shoes the Boot

The boot -- tall, short, ankle and everything in between -- is as much a part of fall and winter as football and tailgating. They're warm, stylish and versatile, so what are the hottest looks this season? Many of the themes of spring and summer are carrying over -- the military look and studs give boots and booties an edge. Try grommets, metal studs, and leather and suede colors like olive green --a huge fall color, grey, khaki and chocolate brown. Another detail not to pass up are laces. Hiking boot styles are hot, and they lace up well above the ankle in many cases. Laces offer a more customized fit when you can tie and untie them to fit your ankle and leg better. Be sure your laced boots actually do lace if you want that adjustability - many simply have the look of laces, not ones that actually function.

These styles look great with jeans and cropped cargo pants. For casual boots, it's easy to stay warm and cozy with shearling, faux fur, quilting and other toasty materials. They're your best bet against the elements, and they can be super stylish as well. Heeled and dressier styles sport these accents as well, so don't be afraid to dress it up. The sky's the limit when it comes to heels this season. Girls who prefer flats won't be left out in the cold because flat boots are totally fashionable - but so are heels. You'll see lots of block heels on boots, making them more stable than skinny stilettos, and wedges add stability, too. Some more details to look for are sparkles - Uggs-like styles that are sequined are everywhere, and pointy worker boots with high heels are styles that blend the masculine and feminine. So give those sandals and flimsy shoes the boot in favor of some fabulous winter footwear.
