Aerobic fitness, or cardio, works out your cardiovascular system, creating more endurance and allowing your heart, lungs and blood vessels to transport oxygen around your body effectively. Using large muscle groups, like the legs, increase your heart rate. Shoot for about two hours of moderate aerobic activity per week, like walking, leisurely swimming or the elliptical trainer. Work up to adding another hour of vigorous training, like running, swimming laps or fast dancing. Strength training with weights or resistance encourages muscular fitness. You can use dumbbells, homemade weights like soup cans or your own body weight to achieve great results.
Stretching must be included, too - flexibility promotes joint health, reduces stress and helps posture. Balance is also important, especially as we get older and are more prone to falls. Balance and stretching can be performed in a yoga or tai chi workout. Core stability is the final component in a healthy workout - the muscles in your abdomen, lower back and pelvis comprise your core. It enables your entire body to move more effectively. Crunches and exercise ball work improve core fitness.{relatedarticles}
