How to Avoid and Overcome Awkward Sex Moments

Whether it's your first romp with a new guy or getting intimate with your longtime partner, there are certain things that can happen during sex that can totally kill the mood. First, consider your environment. In the effort for things to be as sexy as possible, be sure there are no fire hazards, like candles burning where they shouldn't or gauze-y materials draped over lampshades. It may look hot, but the fire it creates really will be hot. If you're trying to seduce your partner, give your sexy outfit a test drive to be sure it comes off easily. A corset with complicated straps and snaps will have him thinking more about the logistics of your lingerie than what's underneath.

The same goes for any sex toys you want to introduce. Test drive them to see if they are operational, have batteries and that you actually know how to use them, or one of you might end up in the ER with an embarrassing story. Be sure the two of you are up to the rigors of sex. If you have high hopes for the evening, then it pays to be well-rested. Nothing's more embarrassing - or insulting - than falling asleep during the act. If things get a little rough - consensually, of course - it's possible that one of you might hurt the other. If it's just a bruise, then the offending partner should apologize...and the two of you can move on. And as for bodily functions that occur - try to be adults about it. It happens to us all, so giggle like 12-year-olds and try not to be too mortified. Sex is supposed to be fun and bring you closer together, so enjoy it, pitfalls and all.
