Their plates are barely clean and your children are already demanding to know what's for dessert. In most households, dessert is a reward, not a guarantee. And while many parents try to dodge the dessert bullet as often as possible, it's possible to make the post-supper snack a truly nutritious one. Forego cookies, cakes and ice cream for some much cooler options. Here are some great guilt-free options that actually bring something of value to the table. Of course, many of your options will be fruit-based. Purchase high-quality dark chocolate such as Ghirardelli's and melt it over low heat. Be sure not to burn the chocolate. Slice up apples, bananas, strawberries and grapes. Dip half of each fruit in the chocolate. Place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and freeze. The result is a sweet treat that no child or adult will be able to deny. For variety, serve cut-up fruit with fat-free caramel dip found in the produce section of your local grocery store. While ice cream may be full of fat, you can prepare homemade "milkshakes" using low-fat yogurt and fresh fruit. Keep a carton of vanilla yogurt on hand and combine with your child's favorite fruits in the blender. It's every bit as good as the traditional milkshake... sans all of the full-fat ingredients. If you're still sold on the freezer aisle of your grocery store, opt for all-natural sorbet.
