Hot Drinks for Cold Weather

Old man winter is alive and well this year, and what better way to come in from the cold than with a nice hot drink? When it comes to helping your children ward off the bone-chilling cold, here are a few beverages that are always in season, especially when the digits on the thermometer continue to drop. It goes without saying that hot chocolate is the go-to drink for your little ones. Opt for the pre-packaged (and sugar-free) brands such as Swiss Miss. You can also make your own tempting blend from scratch. Simply combine 2 cups of milk, 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Spice things up with by adding a chocolate mint or a peanut butter cup to put a unique twist on a family favorite. An apple cider a day is another way to keep that frosty feeling away. This drink is good to the core.

Combine 8 cups of apple cider, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of whole cloves and 2 cinnamon sticks. Mix cider and sugar in a pot until sugar dissolves. Combine cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange rinds in a spice bag and add to cider. Simmer on low for approximately 15 minutes. On a nippy day, who can forget a nice glass of warm milk as a standby? Heat two cups of milk with 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Stir over low heat until warm. While it's easy to satisfy that sweet tooth, canned chicken broth will also go a long way for soothing those souls. Simply heat up a can of broth and top it off with some crackers. It's sure to help your child warm up from the cold.
