Indoor Exercise for Kids

Snow days are no excuse for slow days. Cold weather may seem like the ultimate "get out of exercise free" card, but it shouldn't be. Regardless of the outside temperatures, your children need to stay active. It's the foundation for a healthy lifestyle for kids and adults alike. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children get at least one hour of physical activity every day come rain, sleet or snow. While this may seem like a cinch during those warmer months, coming up with creative ways to stay active can present a challenge during winter. Here are a few ways to keep your children on their toes. Have a dance off. Make a playlist that comprises of your child's favorite songs. If dancing freestyle isn't his thing, invest in a dance video or game. Other inexpensive toys that your child can play with include Twister, hula hoops, jump rope and other games that require your child to get moving.

Another option is to recruit your child into working out with you. Have him do some yoga or Pilates with you. You may also consider indoor gyms like the YMCA or Little Gym. If you're still looking for an activity, encourage your child to help you clean up the house. Offer an allowance as an incentive. You won't believe how fast money will get them moving. Although it may seem like a challenge, there are plenty of physical activities your children can do indoors. The trick is to put an end to the vegging and couch potato behavior that may have gone on far too long.
