For many parents, the family holiday picture is the nightmare before Christmas. But with a few smart strategies, it's not impossible to get that perfect shot for gifts or cards. Digital cameras have made getting the perfect shot super-simple, especially if you're a do-it-yourselfer.

Consider using a good candid shot of the family taken at the end of summer, when everyone is tanned and well-rested. You might want to use another holiday's picture - a fabulous Fourth of July picture might just work in your picture, for example. If you decide to have a friend take the picture or use a timed camera, prepare the place where you want to take the picture first, clearing it of clutter or anything else that might ruin the shot. Set up stepstools, seating areas and places for family members to stand before they get on the scene.
