Try not to be a spoiled sport. When you join a group activity, make the goal of your participation to have fun and get a good workout. Far too many people take whatever sport they're playing too seriously. The end result is that they walk away from the game feeling frustrated or angry. So long as you're getting exercise and enjoying yourself, the end goal has been met. Team sports have myriad benefits, not the least of which is improving your health. Sports like football, softball, ultimate Frisbee, kickball and even paintball can get a good sweat going and get you outside to enjoy the fresh spring air. Practices and competitions can be great opportunities to get off the couch a few times a week and get a workout.
Plus, the camaraderie of joining a team and making friends with teammates is a compelling reason to participate. Look into opportunities at work or in your community, and if the interest is there but the organization isn't, then why not start a team yourself? Most cities have adult leagues for team sports, and the Internet is a good place to start if you want to get involved. When you belong to a team, your teammates depend on your participation, so you're held accountable for showing up, unlike working out solo, where it's easier to slack off. So get out there, work up a sweat, enjoy the company and reap all the benefits of belonging to a sports team.
