The Doctor Is in -- Are You?

Consult your physician. Regardless of what health issues you might have, it's important to speak to your doctor, especially if you suffer from any medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. One diet does not fit all. You may require a program that reduces your intake of sugar. Or perhaps you need a plan that eliminates your consumption of red meat. Your doctor will take into account your medical history and give guidance on the plan that is most suitable to you. Remember to get a checkup every year with a primary care physician or internal medicine specialist - women also should check in with the gynecologist at least once a year, but this specialty may not cover all of your health needs. Involve yourself in the examination as much as the doctor does - don't simply lie back and let her examine you. Doctor visits don't last long, so use your time together wisely.


Ask questions about not only the symptoms bothering you, but also general health topics such as weight, mental health, exercise and diet. When the doctor runs regular tests such as checking cholesterol or thyroid levels, ask her what your results mean and how they might impact your health. If she prescribes medication, ask if it's really necessary. Be sure to inquire about side effects, drug and alcohol interactions, how long you should take the medicine, and whether or not your insurance covers the medicine. Taking an active role in your health and opening up an honest dialogue with your doctor can prevent health problems down the road.
