- Start by saturating your hair with cool tap water before entering salt or chlorinated water. If your hair is completely wet before you dive in, then it can't absorb much more drying pool or ocean water. After your dip, use special products to get rid of any residual chlorine or salt water in your hair after swimming. The chemicals can leave a green hue in your summer locks.
- Avoid using hot water to wash and rinse your hair. Cool water helps hair retain its color and shine.
- Avoid sun overexposure. Throw on a hat or a scarf or sit in the shade when outdoors for long periods of time. Your skin isn't the only thing that the sun's rays might damage.
- Use a leave-in conditioner. Redken's hair director, Jon Pulitano, told Vogue how to treat summer hair after spending time at the beach. "Always take a leave-in conditioner to the beach and use it frequently, especially after swimming," he advises. Make sure the product has UVA and UVB protection to avoid sun-damaged hair.
- Moisturize from within. Stay hydrated to maintain healthy hair by drinking plenty of water in the summer, especially when outdoors for long periods of time.
- Watch your diet. Following a diet high in omega-6 fatty acids can help hydrate your hair. Consuming too much sugar, on the other hand, can deplete necessary nutrients from your skin and hair.
