Don't try to predict how your child will react. He or she will likely experience a multitude of different emotions -- ranging from fear and confusion to frustration or anger. Whether your child's reaction is positive or negative, handle the situation with kid gloves. Remember, the situation will take some adjustment. When the time finally comes to introduce your children to your new mate, pick a situation that is stress free, a situation where everybody can relax. Make it a fun activity in which everybody can participate. Consider a day at the beach, a game of mini golf, a trip to the zoo or another outing that is likely to take away the edge. Whatever you do, don't force the situation. Remember, it may take your children time to acclimate to this new person who will be vying for your attention and affection. Be patient and give it time. New families don't form overnight.
