Group support can be effective in many ways by offering emotional sharing, mentoring, problem solving, and teaching. For instance, if a person has never learned how to cook low-fat meals, a group with a nutrition leader can provide guidance. Tackling weight struggles in a group environment is fun and motivating.
As you watch others experiencing the same struggles, you'll benefit not only from their support but by returning support as well. The changes that take place from losing weight go beyond just changing sizes. The process often helps people develop increased awareness of self and others. It also helps the dieter form strategies for problem solving and become persistent in accomplishing tasks.
Studies have shown that persons who diet with a buddy or a group of buddies are more successful. One study at Brown University showed that 76 percent of solo dieters were able to complete a weight loss program but that only 24 percent maintained the loss for 10 months. An estimated 95 percent of those in a support group completed the program and 66 percent were able to maintain the loss.
Losing weight and keeping it off can be a difficult feat, but having the right support system in place can help you accomplish your goal with ease.
