Low Fat
Some dietary fat is needed for good health as they supply energy and promote absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Other fats, however, provide very few nutrients and are considered "empty" calories - meaning their energy value far outweighs their nutritive value. These are the calories that usually end up around our waist lines. And some fats, such as saturated fats, are linked to higher blood pressure and risk of heart disease. Low Fat diets come in many forms but generally adhere to the principal of lowering both your overall consumption of fat (no more than 30% of your daily caloric intake should come from fats), and saturated fat.

Glycemic Index
The Glycemic Index is a method of ranking carbohydrate-based foods based on the rise in blood sugar they produce after consumption. The higher the rise in your blood sugar the higher the rise in your insulin levels. This is a critical factor for diabetics and, through recent studies, lower blood sugar has been tied to an increase in satiety after eating and increased "good cholesterol". This has spawned several diet and nutrition programs aimed at controlling your weight through maintaining your blood sugar levels by consuming foods that are relatively low on the Glycemic Index.

High Fiber
Dietary fiber has long been known to be a key part of balanced nutrition. Dietary fiber is found mainly in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes and has been scientifically proven to help with a number of digestive issues over the years. More recently, studies show diets high in fiber can promote satiety, lower cholesterol, lower risk of heart disease, and help control blood sugar levels.

Low Calorie
Simply put, calories are a measure of stored energy within food. Humans burn a certain amount of energy (calories) throughout their day. Low calorie diets aim to have dieters consume less calories than they burn to lose weight. Most traditional diet plans are, in some way, calorie controlled or low calorie plans.

Low Carb
Low Carbohydrate or Low Carb diets encompass a broad range of diet approaches with one central theme ? controlling your carbohydrate intake (breads, starches, processed sugars, etc), will bring about ketosis ? a metabolic function whereby your body actually starts to burn its' own fat. Usually the ketosis phase is generally short-lived and dieters move to a more healthy "maintenance phase". This diet approach rocketed to the forefront several years ago when Dr. Robert Atkins presented research to the American Medical Association on how low carb diets can actually be heart healthy. There have been several position papers since then that this may not be the case and this would still be a hotly debated topic if the low carb diet craze were as hot a topic today.
